History of Mancherial


Mancherial is a Municipal town in Adilabad district in the south Indian state of Telangana. It is located on the north banks of Godavari River with an area of 35 km2 (14 sq mi). It is situated 253 kilometres (157 mi) north east of the state capital Hyderabad. As of 2011 Census, it has 86,911. inhabitants.[3] It very close to sripada yellampalli project.Mahankali Jatara (quarry jatara) is conducted every year which attracts more than 10000 people.Samakka sarakka jatra is done on the banks of godavari for every 3 years and people from goliwada on the other bankside joins it.Kawal wildlife sanctuary, pranahita wildlife sanctuary and shivaram wildlife sanctuary are just 40 km from mancherial.

Demographics

As of 2011 census of India, Mancherial has a population of 86,911. Males constitute 51% of the total population and females 49%. Mancherial has an average literacy rate of 75.71%, higher than the national average : male literacy is 83.16%, and female literacy is 67.92%. In Mancherial, 8% of the population is under 6 years of age.

Majority people practice Hinduism, followed by Islam and Christianity. Languages spoken include Telugu,followed by Urdu, Hindi and English.

Economy

Mancherial is a commercial hub of the coal belt area of Singareni Collieriesof Srirampur, Ramakrishnapur,Mandamarri and Bellampalli areas.Its proximity to the rich cement minerals and the coal mines fuels the economy. MCC (Mancherial Cement Company) is the cement production unit. Singareni Collieries are the largest employers in town, Orient Cement (Devapur) factory and Sirpur Paper Mills. It has a thriving market for agricultural produce.There are around 150 ceramic pipes companies around it.SCCL power plant is under construction near Jaipur.

Festivals

Bathukamma is a festival celebrated by the Hindu women of Telangana. It is followed by Boddemma in the month of September–October. Bathukamma is a beautiful flower stack,arranged with seasonal flowers, in seven concentric layers, of potter’s clay like a cone. Bathuku in Telugu means live/life, and Amma means mother; is celebrated for the glory, later denoted as Goddess Gauri – the patron goddess of womanhood. Bathukamma festival celebrates grandly by people. 12 years pushkaralu starts from July 14, 2015 Godavari river

Other festivals include Ganesh Chaturdhi, Durga puja, Dussera, Diwali, Holi, Rakhi, Makara Sankranti, etc.
